VR Creator Lab

Take your VR video creation to the next level. YouTube is taking applications for a 3 month learning and production intensive for VR creators. Participants will receive advanced education from leading VR instructors, 1:1 mentoring, and $30K - $40K in funding toward the production of their dream projects.

The VR Creator Lab begins with a three day “boot camp” August 7-9, 2017 at YouTube Space LA in Playa Vista, CA. These days will be chock full of workshops, coaching, pre-production, and social activities.

Following the boot camp, and over the next three months, each channel will produce at least four original and experimental VR videos and one behind-the-scenes video. These videos can be a multi-part series or four standalones. They can be shot in a sound stage or on location. Either way, we’ll provide the funding, cameras and audio gear, stage (if applicable), and mentorship to help you make these videos soar.

The cohort will gather at YouTube Space LA every other Monday from August 28 - November 6, 2017 to review works-in-progress, meet with mentors, and hear talks from leaders of the VR industry.

The VR Creator Lab is a partnership between YouTube, VR Scout, and VR Playhouse. The collaboration includes all elements of the program from creator selection and curriculum development to production and content promotion. YouTube is thrilled to partner with two leaders within the virtual reality creative, technical, and editorial industry.

Q: How many people per channel can participate in the Lab?
A: Up to three team members per channel may participate in the program. All potential team members should be listed in the application.

Q: Can I miss any dates?
A: Because of the significant financial commitment YouTube is making to each creator, we ask that each channel commit to attending all programming. Exceptions can be made for illnesses or other emergencies.

Q: Do you cover travel expenses?
A: While this program is open to any creator regardless of their home location, we expect everyone to get themselves to each gathering at YouTube Space LA.

Q: Do I have to spend every dollar of my funding on production expenses or can I use some funds to “pay” myself?
A: Our goal is for every dollar to be “put on screen”. If you need to retain a portion of your funds to pay yourself, you can do so so long as it’s in service of realizing the vision of the project(s) with which you applied to the Lab.

Q: Can I provide or secure additional funds for my projects in the Lab?
A: By all means!

Q: Can I publish videos produced in this program anywhere?
A: Program videos can be promoted on other social media platforms, but must be published only on YouTube for the first year. Beyond that window, you may additionally publish to other platforms.
