Hello, thank you for being a Junior Achievement volunteer. JA More than Money consists of five 45-minute sessions that help young students understand financial literacy and entrepreneurship concepts. The program introduces a set of 7 characters that help explain money-management, goods and services, starting a business, global markets, and more. Extended Learning Opportunities are provided at the end of each session in the event
that you are teaching the program in an after-school setting or have extra time for additional activities.

JA volunteers have identified three simple keys to success in the classroom:
First, become familiar with the contents of your JA kit;
Second, prepare for each session by reading the volunteer guide and
identifying the appropriate materials you’ll need from your kit;
And finally, be prepared to share personal, real-world experiences
and examples that will help students relate to the content.

New volunteers tell us they spend, on average, 30 to 40 minutes preparing for each class. As you become more experienced, your prep time will likely decrease.

Inside the kit, you will find two copies of the Guide for Volunteers and Teachers. One is for you, the second is for your classroom teacher. The guide is yours to keep. We encourage you to write in it; highlight key points, make notes of local and personal examples you want to share. You’ll want to keep your guide close and reference it during class to help you stay on track.

Inside the guide, you’ll find a Master List of Materials. Be sure your kit contains each of these items, in the correct quantity. If anything is missing please contact your local JA office right away.

1) Each kit item has an item number and name printed on it for easy identification.
2) Many volunteers find it helpful to organize the kit materials by session; placing the items for each session in a separate envelope or folder. This makes it easy to retrieve the materials when you need them.
3) Some materials are used more than once. For example, the JA Banner and Table Tents are listed for all 5 sessions. Be aware that the Vocabulary Flash Cards are labeled A to Y – It’s helpful to divide them up based on when they’ll be used.
4) In sessions two and four, students play Side 1 or 2 of the Business Board Game in groups. Carefully review the instructions before class, so that you can explain the game to students. You’ll also want to organize the materials in advance – placing them in envelopes or bags
to expedite game set up and start.

Always remember to arrive early for each session and bring a photo ID. This will allow you time to find parking, sign-in at the school office and to prepare the classroom.

Digital resources, such as online flashcards, posters, and game boards, may be used throughout the program sessions. These are optional enhancements, and if you’d like to use them, plan to talk with your teacher in advance of your first class to determine if the technology is available. Please also check with your teacher before bringing any treats in for students, as there may be restrictions.
