Test work on re-creating classic Star Wars shooter Dark Forces in Unreal Engine.

Demo will be released soon. All Steam owners of Dark Forces will be eligible for the Unreal Edition.

This is a new project I have begun to remake Dark Forces in Unreal Engine. The eventual goal is to re-create all of the gameplay of the first mission, 'Secret Base' (that was also the original Dark Forces demo!)

A bit of background:
Several years back, I created a series of custom missions for Dark Forces called 'The Dark Tide'. Along with the help of talented people, we released 8 missions as Episodes I-IV. The final release was supposed to be Episode V, but by that time I had begun working in the AAA game industry and I put my plans on hold.

Rather than try to create a mod for an old game, I thought it would be more fun for fans (and new ones to come!), to play a re-creation of the game in Unreal Engine as a tribute to the original, yet adapted to modern gaming.

How can this Unreal Engine edition improve on the original, JEDI engine-based Dark Forces?

Graphical improvements:
- Full static and dynamic lighting, post-processing, ambient occlusion, etc. vs. JEDI engine sector based texture palette tricks to simulate light. This can be seen in the example video.

- Gameplay improvements, modifications:
This benefit holds the most possiblities, and is the real benefit over DarkXL. Since there was never a source code release of the JEDI engine, there was never a way to fundamentally add to or alter the game. Re-creating the game this way makes nearly anything possible- to things as simple as full controller support, and hotkeyed weapons to as complicated as better AI behavior, or RPG-like elements.
An example of this kind of change is seen here as interactive pickups (hit Return to pick-up instead of walk over):
