ewcastle is a dance for four couples, who form a square with one couple on each side. First published by Cecil Sharp in 1911, the dance dates back to at least 1651 when it was published in the English Dancing Master (although there is some speculation that this may not be the original tune). The name may come from the Duke of Newcastle rather than the city - William, Duke of Newcastle was a Royalist with interests in the theatre.
