We believe QB Cam Newton of Auburn could go #1 overall to the Carolina Panthers when the 2011 NFL Draft rolls around. In this video, we take a look at all of Newton's pass attempts from inside the pocket in his final six games of the season against Ole Miss, Chattanooga, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Oregon. Screen passes to the WR, RB or TE are not shown in this video, nor are designed roll-outs. Many will have you believe that Newton rarely passed the ball from the pocket at Auburn, but as you can see that is not true. There are approximately 75 or 76 pass attempts clipped in the video, which means that over the time period a little over 1 out of every 2 of Newton's passes saw him taking the snap, standing in the pocket, and delivering the ball according to his reads. He needs to continue working on his feet and his stance, particularly pointing his toe and stepping into his throws properly, but the accuracy he is able to achieve on his passes is exceptional, and many scouts will tell you that the top skill a quarterback must possess in order to project to the next level is accuracy. This is ultimately why I believe he will rise into the top 5 on most teams' draft boards, and why I believe the Carolina Panthers will select him at #1 overall. He is a highly accurate, natural passer, with the potential to be even more accurate.
