Lack of access to public bathrooms, both at night and increasingly during the day, is a health hazard and local human rights violation that has become more frequent this year.
The Louden Nelson bathrooms have been locked for months without any public process. Problems with public bathrooms including occasional vandalism, improper needle use and disposal, and misuse are unfortunate but predictable consequences of public use.
These problems need to be addressed by providing more not less resources (Sharps containers, more attention to staffing, additional bathrooms). They should not be used as an excuse to close them off to the community.
Making these bathrooms, Laurel Park, and the Louden Nelson Community Center less welcome to the homeless community is neither fair, effective, helpful, nor acceptable.
Disabled folks, those outside, and community members generally need access.
