Meet Greater Bostonians and Afghanistan Veterans, Mike Downing and Felicia Pinckney.
Veteran Mike Downing lost both of his legs in Afghanistan, but adjusting to a new physical reality is only part of the challenge. Mike had to make the transition from soldier to civilian. Less than 1% of the population of the United States have experienced warfare, and veterans struggle to connect with civilians upon return home.
Mike enjoys playing golf with the Salute Military Golf Association, a camaraderie of veterans.
Afghanistan Veteran Felicia Pinckney joined the army right of high school because she wanted money for college. She rose to the rank of Sargent First Class, and describes her fellow military in Afghanistan as "a family that [she] would do anything for."
148 Massachusetts service members have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
