Where the Heart Belongs by Joan Backes is an imposing but strikingly simple sculpture made from logs, milled wood, and stainless steel in the Beach Museum of Art's Stolzer Family Foundation Gallery. It is rooted in Backes's childhood memories of trees and the things they become and is also a reflection of her keen observations and questions about place. She brings specific intentions to the work but also revels in what others might see. "The possibilities are open," she says, like the roofless and wall-free "houses" that form the installation.
