I invite you to pickup an instrument & play along, perhaps record it and repost it here. Would love to hear folks adding bluegrass flavor to the song :-)

Posted November 2018 in honor of Alzheimer’s Disease and National Family Caregivers Awareness Month and dedicated to the members at the Old Friends Club (where I volunteer) and to their family caregivers. Bless you all!

"Every Branch and Leaf"
An original song, lyrics and melody by Larry Benitez
Title photo by David Vig on Unsplash.

"Every Branch and Leaf" is intended as a gentle reminder to family caregivers that:
• You are not alone, caregiving resources exist.
• You magnify your strength with help from the community around you.
• Your health and well-being is as important as the care you provide to others.

Lyrics

CHORUS Friendship is a sheltering tree. The shade here's for both you and me. It's quite a relief knowing every branch and leaf Is taking care of sheltering me. This sheltering tree is keeping me dry.
It shields me as the rain goes by.
It's quite a relief knowing every branch and leaf
Is protecting me and keeping me dry. CHORUS

This shading tree is keeping me cool.
The hot sun can sometimes be cruel.
It's quite a relief knowing every branch and leaf
Is offering shade that's keeping me cool. CHORUS
(instrumental)
This caring tree is warming my heart.
It brings friends from both near and far.
It's quite a relief knowing every branch and leaf
Is cultivating joy from the heart. CHORUS

Learn it, share it, sing it

Well, there you have it. I hope you enjoyed the song and perhaps you'll learn it, share it, sing it, and spread the word to family caregivers that this song is for them and we are better together. They do so much every day, I hope the song is a gentle reminder that it's okay to ask for help and that their own health and well-being is important too.

Thanks to the Old Friends Club (https://www.oldfriendsclub.org) organization for inspiring me to write this song and thanks to my wife who contributed ideas for the third verse and for listening to me play this song over and over again to make this video.

Statistics about family caregivers

In 2015 it was estimated
• 43.5 million family caregivers in the United States,
• averaging 24.4 hours a week providing care.
• Roughly a quarter of all caregivers provide 41+ hours a week of care.
• Caregivers of a spouse/partner average closer to 44.6 hours a week.
• 1 in 6 Americans working full-time or part-time are also family caregivers.
Imagine the higher probability of emotional stress, physical and financial strain, and impact on their own health.
