A new electro-pop album [AIR] by F.W.D., nearly the most peculiar tracks made of dusky glitters
F.W.D. (pronounced as “forward”) is an electronic music duo by FIRST AID, a decade-long producer, and WAUKN, an alumni of Goldsmiths university of London. On a day of April 2014, they first met at the YOZOH’s remix album showcase. FIRST AID was there since he had produced some of the tracks, and WAUKN knew people from Magic Strawberry Sound, the record label of YOZOH. On that day, FIRST AID got a chance to listen to the WAUKN’s demo, then he immediately suggested a collaboration project to WAUKN. Before FIRST AID met him, he had been proliferating new tracks almost on a weekly basis but he’d had a feeling that something’s missing. WAUKN had been having difficult times for finding the audiences who can appreciate his music that’s trained and learned from the U.K. Their collaboration was focused on the processes itself; they followed the procedures and rules, and tried to see how the outcomes are. Every single week, WAUKN had been traveling to the FIRST AID’s studio and each trip took almost 6 hours to come and go. After producing a couple of tracks together, they starkly felt a sort of ignition of their musical talents. WAUKN’s free-flowing melodies and FIRST AID’s futuristic beats mingled together and dropped as unheard form of sound. Of course there were some hiccups, but they were able to pin down the overlapped areas and tastes of their musical instincts. Then they started to trim it down and elaborate. However, they had to be in hurry because they knew WAUKN’s time for mandatory military service was coming. Therefore they decided to collect the essentials of their collaboration and release an album of it.
[AIR] by F.W.D is an album that records the recipes of their collaboration and the musical collisions and its unexpected but beautiful outcomes. Even though they worked together only for 6 months, they were able to drop the most improbable and phenomenal tracks that can be made in that short period of time. Normally it’s rough and raw when you listen to the tunes of collaboration projects that the producers have been together not long. Whereas [AIR] sounds quite ripe and utterly fit as if they had been together for a decade. During that half a year of collaboration, they produced roughly a dozen of tracks but 5 tracks that can represent F.W.D best have been picked. It might be not even possible to perfectly define their music, but we might be able to describe these tracks in the genre of electro-pop, the music that travels from the past to the future and finally landed to the present. In those tracks, occasionally WAUKN’s deep and heavy lines get embroidered with FIRST AID’s exceptionally delicate touches. It goes back to jazz and comes back to future R&B, and crisscrosses several different genres while building an unseen soundscape. [AIR] is a rare well-made electronic music album of these days, that allows us to catch a glimpse of the hopeful future of current mundane genres.
The 2 of record labels, Magic Strawberry Sound and YOUNG,GIFTED&WACK Records, worked together for the release of [AIR]. Even though WAUKN will be absent for a year or two, Magic Strawberry Sound sees this album can bring a pronounced impact to the electronic music scene, and YOUNG,GIFTED&WACK, a versatile maverick label, agrees to it. A long-time fan of these labels as well as a talented visual artist, Hobin Kim, was able to come up with a brilliant album artwork for [AIR]. He’s been the most enthusiastic visual artist we’ve seen; he prepared a dozen of samples not just for the album cover, but also typographies for the artists. [AIR] will be released worldwide on CD and digital formats. Never miss to experience these enchanting tunes that’s adorned with dusky glitters refined from the rarest auditory stimuli.
