I’ve always wanted to be an action figure. Now I am. Well, I’m an Iron Man action figure. Okay, it’s more of a doll, but what matters is my sweet head, which was 3D scanned and printed by Hasbro and 3DPlusMe.
Super Awesome Me is a custom action figure service being rolled out in a handful of Walmarts across the country. You sit in a chair while a camera pans over your face and captures a full-color 3D scan, then tell the kiosk whether you want to be Iron Man or Captain America, and in a few weeks you get an action figure of yourself.
The head is a sandstone-like material, similar to what you’d get if you ordered a full-color 3D print from a service like Shapeways. It’s hard, gritty, and feels brittle, but it’s colorful and looks cool — and it’s basically what you’re paying $50 for.
