  • 12 volt battery powered 18650 spot welder experiment Part 4: Welding .15 mm Nickel strips

    6,358 views 1 year ago
Do this at your own risk. This is not a tutorial.
Here's proof that a simple do it yourself battery tab spot welder can work. Probably easier to set up than commercial ones as there are fewer setting you can make.
I was using .10 mm nickel strips for my test welds with the diy battery tab welder. The welder works well with the thinner material. My order for the slightly thicker .15 mm nickel strips came in so I was eager to see how the welder perform with the thicker material.
I set my timer on the welder to .2 seconds and made a dozen or so welds on a NC battery from a power tool battery pack. To my untrained eye, the welds came out pretty well. I might have used slightly less pressure when I press the electrodes on the thinner .1mm nickel strips. The welds came out well with either thickness. I suspect it will do well with even thicker .20 mm nickel strips. If the weld does not penetrate the thicker strip easily, I can do a double tap on the momentary switch to ensure a good weld.
I suspect the welder will work with even thicker material as I can easily increase the welding time by adjusting the digital timer.
Since this is a 12 volt battery powered 18650 spot welder, you can use it even when you don't have access to AC power. Less power hungry, more stickiness. It's also easy to make and very affordable.
