In 2012, a small group from VSP Global traveled to Soweto, South Africa, to provide eye exams and eyewear to nearly 200 children and staff from a local school. Many of these schoolchildren experienced clear vision for the first time in their lives.
On April 10, 2014, VSP Global companies will be collaborating with the Brien Holden Vision Institute and Optometry Giving Sight to open a new eye health clinic at the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto. Over the next three years, our goal is to provide 30,000 children with free eye care and eyewear, donated by Nike Vision, reducing uncorrected visual impairment among Soweto schoolchildren by 90%.
For many people who lost or damaged their glasses during the storm, recovery efforts following Superstorm Sandy are much more difficult, making even simple tasks complex. To help, VSP Vision Care (VSP) committed relief efforts to ensure those affected have access to quality eyecare and eyewear.
Two state-of-the-art, 40-foot mobile eyecare clinics were sent to impacted areas in New York and New Jersey. Each clinic is outfitted with an exam room, eyewear frame dispensary and finishing lab allowing glasses to be made on-site. Examinations were provided by local VSP optometrists who had to close their offices due to the effects of Superstorm Sandy.
