The Inner Circle Show

The Inner Circle was founded in 1923 by a number of political journalists, and continues to this day. Each year the group hosts a musical theater show in which members of the media hold up a mirror to New York's political elite (with a special focus on Hizzonor - the Mayor himself) during the social event of the year.

The show is always followed by the Mayor's rebuttal, usually in song. Most famously, Mayor Giuliani dressed as a Marylin Monroe lookalike and sang a rather provocative version of "Happy Birthday Mr. President." Last year, Mayor Bloomberg, in full flower child garb performed in "Mair." In 1984, Mayor Koch jumped out of the mouth of a man-eating plant, a la Little Shop of Horrors.
