Living in a tiny apartment can sound like a nightmare. The lack of storage space, being too close for comfort with a flatmate, or feeling claustrophobic are just some of the things that deter us.
But Sydney siders Jen and Marc insist that a small home can mean living big. With intentional, clever design, you can create a small apartment that meets all of your needs, and gives you a beautiful space to live in.
In this video, Jen and Marc give us a tour of their beautiful compact apartment, situated in the heart of Sydney’s bustling inner city. What was once a traditional one-bedroom apartment has now been renovated into a highly functional and organised compact space, which utilises every nook and cranny for storage and functionality.
Designed by Nicholas Gurney, the apartment is a minimalist’s dream. Jen and Marc say that the space has encouraged them to live with only what they need, and reduced the clutter in their home.
The tiny apartment features innovative designs such as a dining table that can be easily slid across the room to be stored below the kitchen counter, a foldable dividing screen door that separates the living room and bedroom, and no door handles on any of the cupboards.
The couple love the speed with which they can clean their tiny home, and that they can live in an area that is so close to parks and Sydney’s bustling streets.
A big benefit of converting an existing space, rather than building a new structure, is that it is more environmentally sustainable, and takes up less space in population-dense, urban environments. The couple insist that it is important to consider sustainability and our impact on the environment when choosing where we live, and how we design our homes.
