Following the successful release in 2012 of 'Perpetual Motion', the album of Barbara Thompson's compositions performed by the Apollo Saxophone Orchestra, Barbara wrote 'Cities Never Sleep' for The Royal Northern College of Music's Saxophone Day (October 2012) where the ASO were performing the album programme. Having recorded the concert, I couldn't resist the idea of the video. 10 long nights in central London with a very small handheld camera and a couple of freezing evenings standing for several hours on Waterloo Bridge protecting the big cam, provided the footage. Friday and Saturday nights are filled with fun in London's West End and I was overwhelmed by the endless sound of emergency vehicle sirens, sounding off all around me. When I realised that Barbara had already built these into the music, I finished up ambulance chasing into the early hours. Grateful thanks to Rob, Andy and the rest off the ASO for seeing the music one day and playing it so beautifully in concert the next, to the RNC for the sound of its great concert hall and to Barbara, who's compositional talent has never ceased to amaze me. Finally to the revellers of London Town, who never noticed a grubby old man in a dirty raincoat - with a camera.
