AN INTRODUCTION TO FELLOW DREAMERS LOUNGEWEAR & LINGERIE
May 30, 2014
A luxury loungewear and lingerie label with positive social change and sustainability at the very heart of all we do. Fellow Dreamers create delicate pieces made of the finest natural fabrics such as organic cottons and natural silks, combined with artisan-applied hand embroideries designed to be worn on dreamy days right through to flirtatious nights.
Subtle pigments derived from plants, herbs and minerals sit alongside more modern techniques of low-impact digital printing.
Being some of the most intimate clothing you will ever own, we believe that loungewear and lingerie are able to sit outside the restrictions imposed by trends. We lean towards vintage detailing applied in a modern way.
Fellow Dreamers exists to create beauty and pleasure for the wearer, empowerment to the artisans who bring the garments to life, and to challenge the harsh realities of throwaway fashion by engaging with alternative methods of production.
Production and Ethos
We create beautiful, unique, and tactile pieces to be cherished by our customers, while creating fair employment opportunities and good working conditions for women from underprivileged backgrounds in Northern India.
The workshop we collaborate with operates on a not-for-profit basis, where all profits are reinvested into creating more jobs for more women suffering hardship, as well as training and educational opportunities.
In India, women living in poverty are far more likely to be facing tougher challenges than their male counterparts. Many of the women we have worked with have come from challenging backgrounds and have been on the receiving end of extreme poverty , domestic violence , and suffer from a lack of self believe. The workshop offers a safe place for these women to work to open up and share their individual problems with one another. For many situation unfortunately their is no quick fix but earning a steady salary aids a sense of empowerment and choice.
Many girls are deprived a basic education due to the cost and the preference to educate boys first. Around 50% of girls in Uttar Pradesh, India, will fail to be enrolled in school. Of those that are, around 50% will drop out by the age of 12.
We stand against any form of child labour in fact the workshop in India has been imperative in enabling some of the women to have the financial security educate to their young children and also pursue the own education further by offering short working week and flexible hours when required. After the day is finished at school for children the women are able to collect them and bring them back to the workshop where they can play and quite often sleep in a safe environment
We strive to be part of creating an opportunity for fair and flexible employment for women. Fellow Dreamers aims to reduce our carbon footprint by carefully selecting our fabrics and dyeing techniques. We use certified organic cottons sourced from India. No harmful chemicals are used in the production and no genetically modified seeds. This also means safer working conditions for farmers as well as increasing their earnings by around 30%.
