Music has a powerful impact on the life of a child, especially those who need it most. World-wide, thousands of children are participating in socially-driven music programs based on the philosophy and model known as El Sistema. Soundscapes in Newport News, Virginia USA is one of these programs empowering at-risk youth to obtain transformational life skills. Beyond the Music is the story of one program and one musician named Nasheim, but it also mirrors the story of all El Sistema inspired programs throughout the United States.
Directors note: At Soundscapes, I am the Program Manager and a Teaching Artist. I envisioned that our mission could be best strengthened and presented in an informative and emotionally moving format, so I decided to make a short documentary. An active music life is a tremendous social utility that serves children with the most need, and ultimately benefits all members of society.
