Shelter advises families like Alison’s every day – people trapped in terrible conditions because they can’t afford anything else. Help us to do something about it: www.shelter.org.uk/alison
‘When we first looked at it,’ Alison says, ‘it was a really nice house. We thought, this is perfect – it’s perfect for our family.
‘But the winter of that year, then we found out how very, very cold the house was.
‘There’s a massive wind tunnel in the house because the doors have massive gaps at the bottom. The whole house is freezing cold in the winter.
‘When the surveyor came, he said it was below the government standards of housing – no one should be made to live in conditions like these.
‘We can’t move because we simply haven’t got the money to. We both work, my husband full time and me part time because of the children. We can’t save up the money, we can’t do it.
‘There’s a lot of people in the same position as us and it’s terrible. It’s madness. It’s crazy.
‘I don’t think there’s enough affordable housing in the UK – we both work but we can’t afford these high rents, it’s impossible.
‘All we want to do is live a happy life and be warm – for the kids to be warm.’
