  • Great Eggcase Hunt Project Play all

The Shark Trust's Great Eggcase Hunt aims to get as many people as possible hunting for eggcases that have either been washed ashore, or are found by divers and snorkelers underwater. In recent decades, several species of shark, skate and ray around the British coast have dramatically declined in numbers. The empty eggcases (or mermaid's purses) are an easily accessible source of information on the whereabouts of potential nursery grounds and will provide the Trust with a better understanding of species abundance and distribution.

  • Stop Shark Finning Play all

Shark finning is the wasteful practice of removing shark fins at sea and discarding the carcass, often still alive, overboard. Up to 73 million sharks are caught each year for their fins, which makes shark finning one of the greatest threats to sharks.

Finning is illegal in many parts of the world including Europe but in most countries it is still legal to buy and sell shark fins. Furthermore, weak legislation and ineffective enforcement often undermines shark finning regulations and the high value of fins further encourages the exploitation of regulatory loopholes.

The Shark Trust has successfully campaigned on shark finning issues for over a decade and was heavily involved in the adoption of the EU shark finning ban in 2003. We were responsible for the UK Government's enforcement of a ban on the removal of fins on all UK vessels in 2009, and, as a founder member of the Shark Alliance campaign, heavily involved in the review of the EU finning regulation that finally led to the adoption of a fins naturally attached policy on all EU vessels in 2013.

The Shark Trust works with governments and industry to tighten shark finning regulations and ensure compliance, whilst promoting the unsustainable nature of the fin trade: tackling both supply and demand. To find out more visit www.sharktrust.org/finning.
