From seed to table, SFC creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant local food system. Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food and are empowered to improve the long-term health of Central Texans and our environment.
Sustainable Food Center's (SFC) Grow Local program offers Central Texas residents the knowledge & resources necessary to grow their own food in order to alleviate hunger and bolster the health of their families, their communities, and the environment. We envision a world in which everyone can grow food using sustainable gardening practices and with the support of knowledgeable gardening communities.
SFC's Grow Local works to realize its vision by supporting home, school, and community gardeners with classes, trainings, and resources. We offer holistic Introduction to Food Gardening classes, focused intermediate gardening classes, Community Garden Leadership Trainings, and School Garden Leadership and Classroom Trainings. Our Spread the Harvest program reduces financial barriers to food gardening by providing schools and low-income home gardeners with free gardening materials, including seeds, compost, and plants. Our Citizen Gardener Certificate program also encourages gardeners to act as food stewards by volunteering their time at school and not-for-profit gardens.
Sustainable Food Center's (SFC) Farm Direct promotes access to fresh, healthy food by connecting local farmers to schools, worksites, food service operations and Austin shoppers through a network of farmers’ markets, strengthening our local economy.
Our four weekly SFC Farmers' Markets are vibrant events that connect local growers and shoppers to ensure that local, healthy food gets on your plates at home. Our direct marketing projects—Farm to Work, Farm to Cafeteria, Farm to School, and Farm to Family—connect local farmers with hospitals, universities, schools, and worksites to provide fresh produce to individuals and institutions and strengthen the local economy. We envision a future where everyone in our community sources a significant portion of their food from local farmers and ranchers.
Through Sustainable Food Center's (SFC) The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre®, SFC offers community cooking and nutrition education classes for the preparation of meals that are delicious, nutritious, seasonal and affordable, ensuring lasting dietary changes.
SFC's The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® is a place where people come together to learn skills and self-sufficiency in preparing healthy, economical meals, laugh, cook, and enjoy food together. We envision a future where everyone engages with their food system through cooking and healthy eating.
