    There is something about Leila Cartier’s art that just won’t let you look away. Her lush oil paintings and intricate collages simultaneously attract and repel your eye. They are beautiful but also a bit frightening.

    Leila began making collages of jewelry as a counterpoint to her painting. She was inspired when she saw a print by the British horticulturalist Robert Ferber.

    Laila’s art extends a tradition that goes back to the Mannerist painter Bronzino, whose paintings I once compared to the dangerous beauty of a coral snake. Show less
