Stalworts from the golden era of club/house music gather in the National Aids Memorial Grove for fund raising, flag dancing, community making, and exercising! -- http://photojimsf.com
Flag dancing has it's roots in fan dancing, prominent in the gay leather and disco scene in the '70's. After losing favor in the new wave 80's, it resurfaced again in the 90's as "flagging". Large colorful, often tie-dyed fabric is weighted on one side to make it easy to spin and wave elaborate figure 8 patterns, while dancing the night away at the gay circuit parties.
The music in this video is from internationally famous progressive house dj Jerry Bonham. You may remember his days as longtime resident at Universe, Pleasuredome, and Spundae, the preeminent dance clubs of the '90's in San Francisco.
In 1997 a group of gay flag dancers began meeting in the newly designated National Aids Memorial Grove, on Nancy Pelosi Drive in Golden Gate Park. It was a celebration of life in a time of sorrow.
Nearly 20 years later, dj's, organizers and participants are still gathering to donate their time, love, and energy to raise funds for local and sometimes national charities.
Xavier Caylor is the main organizer, and also hosts flag making and dancing workshops in San Francisco. Here's a link for more info:http://www.flaggercentral.com/
The recipient of this month's flagging event is The Shanti Project, a charity that was first on the battlefield since the 1980's, delivering practical and emotional support to AIDS patients. This year they announced a merger with PAWS (pets are wonderful support), another long time AIDS charity that provides pets, pet care and support for AIDS patients. Link:http://www.shanti.org/
