Idiosyncratic and ambitious, NDT has always had its own unique place within the modern dance movement. The company stands out. Founded in 1959 by New Yorker Benjamin Harkarvy, together with the Dutchmen Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie and 18 dancers from the legendary Het Nederlands Ballet, NDT started an international dance revolution.
Choreographers Glen Tetley (US) and Hans van Manen (NL) infused NDT with an avant-garde aesthetic that proved hugely appealing to the public. Their productions put the company instantly on the global map. A long list of internationally acclaimed choreographers followed: Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke. Today the company is led by artistic director Paul Lightfoot with his creative partner Sol León.
November 16-19, 2016, NDT will perform in New York City Center, with the following ballets:
Woke Up Blind - Marco Goecke
The Statement - Crystal Pite
Safe as Houses - Sol León & Paul Lightfoot
Stop-Motion - Sol León & Paul Lightfoot
