Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) uses adventure education at sea to provide youth with real-life challenges that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to live healthy, productive adult lives. Our award-winning TopSail Youth Program brings learning to life aboard tall ships where youth become part of the crew. Our highly interactive program is offered as day sails, voyages, or both. Skills gained include problem solving, decision-making, planning, self-reliance, team building and leadership. Launched in 2002, the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson and their young crews were designated the Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles. These traditionally rigged 110-foot wooden sailing vessels were built on the L.A. Waterfront. They are the only twin brigantines in the world. In addition to our core program, we offer hands-on STEM learning, maritime skill building, physics of sail, science at sea, and ocean literacy programs.
