    Norilsk - Natrure Morte
From the album: The Idea of North

Directed by: Nick Richer - Heavy One Productions
    Colour-edited by: Petr Maur

Quebec's doom-death band Norilsk has unveiled the second music video off their first full length album, The Idea of North, released earlier in 2015 on Hypnotic Dirge Records. An unorthodox folk-inspired deconstruction, the spooky "Nature Morte" (Still Life) represents Norilsk's atmospheric side. The dark and melancholic images of the video were shot in the haunted woods north of the Ottawa River (Canada), on the spur of the moment, at the end of a gloomy summer day.

Named after Siberia’s northernmost city, home of a famous heavy metal smelting complex, Norilsk is a doom-death band from Gatineau (Québec), Canada. After releasing an EP, Japetus, in July 2014, Norilsk now unveils their debut album - “The Idea of North” in a glorious digipack edition on Hypnotic Dirge Records.

“The Idea of North” is a doom-death album crafted for the winter season: it has slow and crushing riffs, death growls, and atmospheric arrangements. An evocation of an ominous presence over a vast wasteland, “The Idea of North” is a massive offering that triggers the imagination. Its music draws comparison with doom-death bands such as My Dying Bride, Morgion and Ablaze in Hatred, but it also has a few atmospheric sludge/post metal elements reminiscent of Isis and Morne.

    Feedback:
"The album, as a whole, is a slow moving glacier, much like the Japetus EP that came before it, but it is much thicker, longer, and brutally unforgiving, not stopping its steady march from the Northern mountains to the Northern ocean, where it will continue as icebergs destined to down ships. It’s a ride that you can’t just hop onto and off of when you are ready. This is an album full of nuance and attention to detail, and should be played as such, preferably with headphones. Throw in a doomed cover of a Belgian pop song, and you’ve got yourself a damn near perfect listen. Beyond recommended, I will probably go through two copies of this album this year alone."
    -Crown of Viserys

"And one of the great strengths of 'The Idea Of North' is that it never sounds like a collection of ideas in search of a home: quite the opposite, in fact. There's a completeness in the way it grabs initial attention with the rousing, sludgy stomp of the first half, then evolves into a more chilly and thoughtfully introspective atmospheric beast (in places, even reminiscent of Dolorian); like a snow-fanged apocalypse avalanching across the world, leaving the last survivors huddled in the frozen wastes of its wake. The band call it 'crafted for the winter season', but by the visceral and lonely conclusion of the title track it seems quite possible that winter will be eternal."
    -Doom-Metal.com

"This hour-long ode to the Arctic is a monolithic jamfest, through and through. From beginning to end, The Idea of North is a fantastic example of what modern doom metal should sound like. Thick, slow as molasses, and greatly atmospheric, Norilsk’s debut has exactly what it takes to land this band a spot in any doom metal fan’s list of bands to look out for."

  • Nachtterror / Altars of Grief - Of Ash and Dying Light Play all

The long-awaited split release between two eclectic southern-Saskatchewan metal acts - Nachtterror and Altars of Grief - is now available to pre-order! Beginning with a Blackened Doom foundation, both Nachtterror and Altars of Grief branch from there and incorporate various other influences into their sound, including death-doom, symphonic black metal, and soundtracks music to create fresh and genuine music rooted in atmosphere and emotion! The album was recorded by Justin Bender (Third Ion / ex-Into Eternity)earlier this year at Blue Door Studio in Regina, SK. If the music itself wasn’t a reason enough to pick up this release, artist Sam Nelson has also drawn two amazing and distinct cover images for this release, presented in all its glory and detail on both sides of the record.

“Of Ash and Dying Light” is being release on a 10” record, and is strictly limited to 300 copies, only 100 of which will be available from the Hypnotic Dirge Webshop!! While supplies last, the record also comes with two 11cm x 7cm Nachtterror and Altars of Grief logo stickers!

    Nachtterror
Nachtterror is a Canadian Blackened Doom project established in 2004. Focused on creating an epic soundscape with an intense concentration on storytelling, Nachtterror aims to create acaptivating and emotionally engaging doom metal experience.

Nachtterror's music reflects emotional states more so than concepts and ideas. From the violent, agony of anger and suffering to the numb discontent of depression, all states of being are experimented and explored.

As well as the upcoming "Of Ash and Dying Light" split with Altars of Grief, Nachtterror is also currently in works to release a full length album entitled "Judgement".

    Altars of Grief
Hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Altars of Grief was conceived in the frigid, winter months of 2013. The band draws from an eclectic musical background, weaving soaring choral arrangements with powerful, driving death metal; morose, gothic doom and frantic, uptempo black metal passages. In 2014, the band released its debut album, This Shameful Burden and followed up with a tour of central Canada in its support.

Altars of Grief's material on "Of Ash and Dying Light" is an incredible step for the band, delivering some of the best melancholic blackened doom in Canada and following in the footsteps of greats such as Woods of Ypres! Reflective, sombre, and personal lyrics and music drenched in atmosphere, this is definitely a band to watch that has arisen from the Central Prairie Plains!

  • Verlies - Le Domaine des Hommes Play all

Based out of the French city Lille, Verlies is an avant-garde Black Metal band playing dark, strange, and experimental music. Without restrictions of conventional song structure, Verlies is all about creating dark and claustrophobic music with a strong emphasis on atmosphere. Ranging from piercing and uncompromising Black Metal, to experimental jazz melodies, to post-rock sensibilities, and everything in between, the music is raw, bold, and truly exceptional. Songs change pace and vibe frequently through their lengthy playing time, using many different techniques and methods to tell their story. Vocally, founding member N. mixes ferocious and tortured screams with enchanting and morose clean vocals that truly draw you in providing some uplifting moments alongside the raw hatred and despondency. Verlies’ debut album “Le Domaine des Hommes” is full of surprises but remains raw and never leaves the Black Metal vibe too far behind, instead using it as a base for their other sounds to draw from. Many bands these days try their hand at an unconventional approach to the Black Metal sound but only a few can pull it off genuinely and Verlies is one of those bands. Too often, the term “Black Metal Art” is thrown out haphazardly, but we humbly believe that it fits in this case!

Headed by founding member N., the project of Verlies started as a one-man project, but now has a full live lineup to spread their unconventional hatred throughout Northern France. Their debut album “Le Domaine des Hommes” was previously released digitally through their Bandcamp page, but now the album will get an official release in a noble and carefully designed 4 panel digipack, including a 12 page booklet and a bonus sticker while supplies last. The first cooperative release by Hypnotic Dirge Records and Throats Productions!

  • Subarctic Nocturnes: Within the Ice [Volume II, 2015] Play all

Free digital compilation album "Subarctic Nocturnes: Within the Ice" [Volume II] released now!

A few weeks ago, we released a Doom Metal collection under the Subarctic Nocturnes banner. As we stated at that time, it was meant to be the first of a three-part trilogy series of compilation albums that we would be releasing. Now, we present to you "Subarctic Nocturnes: Within the Ice[Volume II]", a collection of Black Metal and associated genres!

Within this volume, a few different variations of Black Metal is included. The start of the album includes more fast-paced, and aggressive Black Metal, while the end of the album includes more introspective and melancholic Post-Black Metal. It is not a perfect science to be sure, but an effort was made to make the songs flow as best as possible, which can be a challenge when including twelve different visions!

There is equal measures of new and old material included within, with a nice mixture of Hypnotic Dirge artists and associated guests. A french rendition of Celtic Frost`s 'A Dying God Coming into Human Flesh' is included from the French band Verlies, new material from netra presenting one of the most straight-forward Black Metal songs in the project's history, new demo material from Galaktik Cancer Squad, a reworked track from Epitimia, a track from Immortal Bird (ex. Woods of Ypres Drummer Rae's band), a track from Quebecois legends Sorcier des Glaces, introspective blackened metal from Harrow, and the album closer "Let me in" from the fantastic new Post-Black Metal band from Calgary, Numonerean. These, among others, are some of the pieces included in this collection.

  • Atten Ash - The Hourglass Play all

A three-piece atmospheric/melodic death-doom band from North Carolina, Atten Ash is the creation of founding member James Greene who wrote the foundations of the songs which would later become “The Hourglass.” In 2011 James began collaborating with Barre Gambling (founding guitarist of Daylight Dies) and Archie Hunt (vocalist/guitarist of Legion of the Fallen) and the trio continued the musical work: arranging songs, establishing vocal patterns, writing lyrics and guitar solos.

Recorded in 2012, an intricate and encapsulating death-doom portrait permeates Atten Ash’s first full-length recording. Rich in atmosphere, swaying through infectious melodies and razorsharp solos while displaying both melancholy and aggression with conviction and force, “The Hourglass” is the result of a band with considerable maturity and experience, already at the top of their craft, and with a defined vision for their sound placing them among the classic death-doom giants of the genre.

Those pining for genuine melodic/atmospheric death-doom for the dark and cold days ahead, and especially fans and listeners of bands such as Daylight Dies, Slumber, Katatonia, Woccon, Doom:vs, October Tide, and Helevorn (among others) would be wise to heed attention.
