Horizon is the near space programme of Queen Mary's Grammar School in Walsall. We run annual missions to launch payloads carrying tracking hardware and cameras to the stratosphere to altitudes of over 30 km. The payloads record their position above Earth and are tracked by our team of pupils who spend their free time after school designing, building and testing them until they are ready to be launched. High altitude weather balloons lift the payloads into the sky until they burst and the attached parachutes carry the equipment safely back down to Earth.

Horizon aims to raise the profile of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in both our school and the local area. As well as being an unforgettable experience for our pupils, the project helps us foster links with local and national institutions and businesses, inspiring our pupils and broadening their aspirations.

We do all of this on a shoe-string budget. All of the equipment we use is bought from companies accessible to the general public. All of our software is open source and we hope to make our code publicly available soon. We have befriended some amazing sponsors over the years who support our project and help to ensure its continuation.
