Grooms cover horses evacuated from their stables last night as a fire that swept up the hill from the municipal landfill site threatened the Grahamstown Riding Club. Stable staff assisted by owners, friends and volunteers struggled in smoke, dust and cinders brought by strong winds from the dump to remove around 45 horses and ponies from the stables to the safety of paddocks and an open field east of the riding club. Hobson & Co opened their auction yard and horses were taken into the cattle pens there, where they also remained overnight. With similar conditions forecast for today, acting municipal manager Mandisi Planga and waste manager Johann Esterhuizen met with Fire and Rescue Services Manager for Makana, William Welkom. Here Welkom explains what has happened over the past 18 hours, including fires in the industrial area as well as east of Stones Hill.
