I got involved with the automotive service industry late in my professional career, and I thought that making a profit would be easy since I have a background in accounting, particularly computer science and business administration. Boy was I wrong.
The core of what I would like to talk about is in regards to my quest for knowing what each vehicle service needed are, beyond vehicle inspections. I noticed that when vehicles arrived at the shop my service writer would say, "Hello Mrs. Wilson, what can I do for you?", and I thought that was backwards. Why don't we look in our management system that had a million line items of service history and tell the customer what they needed, as part of the greeting with the report of some kind. That's what I would like to talk to you about. It's become my obsession in producing ultra-accurate service tracking software for the family owned vehicle.
