Years of planning has finally come to fruition at West Division with the installment of a 'No Stopping Zone' in front of West Division as part of a pilot project with the Region of Durham.
Road markings across all lanes are painted in front of the West Division entrance/exit located on Kingston Road (westbound) at Brock Road in Pickering. There are also 'No Stopping Zone' signs raised to identify the no stopping zone. Motorists cannot stop in this zone for any reason or for any length of time.
The Region of Durham Works Department began construction on April 18, 2016 around the intersection of Brock Road and Kingston Road, which included storm sewer and water main replacement, road widening, sidewalk reconstruction, traffic signal replacement and the addition of bus-only and bicycle lanes. The widening of the roads and the medians installed on Kingston Road have added to the difficulty for police vehicles to exit West Division. During rush hour, officers responding to emergency calls are delayed trying to make left turns onto Kingston Road from the station.
The no stopping zone will allow members to safely exit the station onto Kingston Road and also increase response times for officers.
Enforcement: Implementation of Regional By-Law
No person shall stop a vehicle on a highway within the designated no stopping zone in front of any police station or emergency facility. Officers would issue a Provincial Offence Notice from their police vehicles like they would for the “improper use of reserved bus lane."
