  • Dark Skies — Rebooting the Classic TV Series — Yesterday Becomes Today

    3,248 views 3 years ago
A modern "Dark Skies" is a cultural commentary about alienation, political rot, armageddon, paranoia and accepted history that is no more than a blatant lie. It's about stacked decks and silent screams and still never giving up. This is why it must come back.

The original, classic and definitive "Dark Skies" is an amazing piece of science fiction that is more relevant today than ever.

First aired on NBC in 1995-1997 and released on DVD in 2011, it is now time to bring it back on television for a new generation of fans.

Created by Bryce Zabel & Brent V. Friedman.

  • Dark Skies - NBC's Classic Alternate History Series Play all

Created by Bryce Zabel and Brent V. Friedman, "Dark Skies" now marks the 20th anniversary of its NBC premiere as the anchor of the network's Thrillogy Saturday night! The cult-hit series mixes fact and fiction in a story of the UFO cover-up in the 1960s, based on the idea that John Kennedy was killed because he wanted to disclose the truth about UFOs in his second term. After JFK's death in the pilot episode, the series became a cultural commentary about alienation, political rot, armageddon, paranoia and accepted history that is no more than a blatant lie. It's about stacked decks and silent screams and still never giving up.

Out of that vision, Brent and Bryce received the Writers Guild "Created by" credit for "Dark Skies." During its 1995 to 1997 run, it won the Emmy award for its thrilling Main Title sequence, and received a WGA nomination for the pilot episode teleplay.

These few clips begin to archive what the series was and why it worked so well. They have been archived by Bryce and Brent, as the series creators, to be "value-added" in the experience.

Another way to re-experience the series is to dive in for the full journey. In that case, we'd recommend the excellent 2011 DVD edition produced and distributed by Shout Factory! This is something you should definitely buy to obtain the full immersive storyline. It has everything — alternate versions of the pilot, documentaries, easter eggs. One of the best DVD compilations of a series ever produced in the estimation of several of the reviewers.

The original, classic and definitive "Dark Skies" is an amazing piece of science fiction that is more relevant today than ever. Produced for Columbia Television (now Sony/Tristar) and NBC, the series anchored the network's Saturday night Thrillogy block.

We would like to reboot the series and have an insanely twisted way (or two) to do just that. It would, however, require a studio and a network that wanted to pay to have it done. We continue to keep hope alive. :-)

  • Alternate History — What if the World Went Another Way? Play all

Alternate history is neither pure fiction nor history because, done well, it can be both. There are different definitions and different standards depending on who you talk to. It is not a historical novel, however, because those accept the facts and live within them. Alternate history moves beyond them, ideally, in a way that makes the history that replaces the narrative we've lived still feel fresh and compelling.

For me, I like my alt.history real. That is, the change lives in the real world (i.e. the bullet that doesn't hit Kennedy) rather than the fanciful world (i.e. Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires), but people disagree on this. It's my taste, that's all.

My specialty has been weaving new dramatic stories within the boundaries of real history. My obsession has been two-fold: JFK and UFOs, and I've written a book on each topic. In 1997, I brought them both together in an NBC series, Dark Skies.

  • Let's Do It — A Comedy About the Making of Ed's Coed Play all

These promotional videos are presented in support of "Let's Do It" — a proposed feature film comedy about the making of "Ed's Coed", the first full-length student film ever made.

While everyone now knows about the Oregon Ducks and their winning football teams, it would probably surprise a lot of people to know that the University of Oregon is where the first student film ever was made. True story.

The silent, black-and-white film "Ed's Coed" was made at the University of Oregon in 1929. Two students — Carvel Nelson and James Raley — had the nerve to ask director Cecil B. DeMille for a camera and he granted them their wish — sending both a camera and dispatching his personal cinematographer to this beautiful college campus in the hinterlands of the Pacific Northwest.

The screenplay of the movie about the making of that movie — Let's Do It — was written by Bryce Zabel and Jackie Zabel, winners of the Writers Guild of America award for original longform screenwriting.

To be perfectly, absolutely, completely clear — Let's Do It is NOT a re-make of the silent film Ed's Coed. It is a comedy ABOUT the behind-the-scenes craziness and romances that happened while making the original film.

    Let's Do It:

    Produced by Bryce Zabel
    Executive Producer: Bill Swindells
Producers: Duncan McDonald, Jackie Zabel, Jordan Yospe, Robert King

  • Life After Contact Play all

LIFE AFTER CONTACT is the title of a multi-media speech presentation Bryce Zabel gives on the subject of UFOs.

It draws upon his experiences in Hollywood with the topic, particularly his NBC television series DARK SKIES, his work on TAKEN, and his Syfy film OFFICIAL DENIAL.

It also is inspired by the book that Bryce co-authored with Richard Dolan, A.D. AFTER DISCLOSURE, now featured on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in 2012.
