As seen in this video the head accelerates into the force. As the head travels forward, skin and long muscles at the back of the neck from the skull down into the upper back area are rapidly stretched. The backward lash stretches skin and muscles at the front of the neck. When the relatively large head is "whipped" in this fashion it can cause injury to the underlying structures that support the head. Many people feel fine immediately after the collision but get worse over the following few days.
In this case pain is often accompanied by discomfort over the area, with a feeling of muscle stiffness, just as if you had done some extra physical activity a few days before. This is due to the body's normal splinting and inflammation response to injury.
How can you tell you have a whiplash?"
Symptoms associated with the whiplash syndrome, some of the lesser ones including:
ringing in the ears
problems with concentration or memory
Some of the more serious symptoms that you have to really watch out for are:
pain in the neck and shoulders
pain between the shoulder blades
numbness/pain in one or both arms
Irritability due to sleep deprivation, depression, fatigue, dizziness, or aching pain is also a common reaction.
It is always best to be examined by a doctor that is familiar with this particular soft tissue injury. Care should be given to restore mobility and function as well as proving relief and a speedy return to daily activities.
