"The anonymity in this virtual world gave me the bravery to be very very real. I was able to overcome a lot of issues by expressing myself creatively in Second Life!"

Artist and photographer Whiskey Monday credits the agency over her digital alter-ego for being able to come to terms with her depression and ultimately contribute to her personal healing process:

"When you suffer from mental health issues it is difficult because of the stigma attached to it. People generally do not know what to say and often tend to give - albeit well-meaning - useless advice to make you feel better. In Second Life I am able to engage with others on my terms and write my own story with complete control over it because I choose the level of exposure.
That is the way it should be, especially in social media!"

Using the creations of others, Whiskey Monday builds sparse yet emotionally complex 3D scenes in SL, which she tweaks until a world emerges that expresses her deepest feelings.

Often dark and brooding, she manipulates the 3D assembly until she finds - as she puts it - a "level of intimacy that allows the viewer a window into her soul".

Unlike many other immersive artists, Whiskey does not invite the community to explore this digital installation freely but only takes one still image, representing her very own interpretation before deleting the scene.

The fleeting moment of truth and vulnerability indeed, captured, as a single frame story!

    Only in Second Life……

As always big thanks to Marianne McCann for managing extra actors on the ground & big thanks to all the background folks who patiently followed my tedious directions. May you emerge from the cutting room floor over time!

Music features the beautiful playing of my good friend Christof from a recording we made in the late 90ties. He left us way too soon but we have not forgotten him!

"The Drax Files: World Makers" profiles the creative people behind the avatars who move the virtual world of Second Life forward with their passion and persistence.

A new video will be released every last Friday or first Monday of the month.

Mixed reality interviews with subjects from all over the globe form the basis of personal stories that profile designers, game-makers, role-players and fashion aficionados, musicians, artists and social-issue activists: for these dedicated residents the avatar is not just a separate pixelated entity, but a true extension of themselves with which they navigate the digital space.

The show will utilize real-life footage and Skype interviews as well as machinima from within Second Life and feature a range of creators from self-taught hobbyists to dedicated pros from all walks of life, from all over the world, cutting across gender, ethnic and generational divides.

Second Life is a world solely made and nourished by its residents - therefore truly only their imagination can be the limit!

  • Documenting Second Life [2007- ∞ ] Play

2006/2007 SL was growing tremendously as the mainstream press hyped the digital universe without taking a breather....and without much insight really! A type of digital parachute journalism emerged only scratching the surface of the engaging possibilities of a virtual world with an open-ended architecture like SL & arguably doing a bit of harm by perpetuating titillating clichees. I entered the world in February 2007 & have enjoyed documenting the ups and downs, the ins and outs, the drama, the creativity, the edge pushing ever since - from a decidedly different angle than other press outlets. These videos span the years 2007 - 2011. My more recent stuff can be seen in the other playlists. I am not stopping...YET!
