Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" marked the beginning of the modern renaissance in Black Cinema. Along with other directors such as Charles Burnett, Charles Lane, Julie Dash and Hale Germia; Spike proved there was an audience for intelligent films featuring people of color. Although set along his path by earlier pioneers such as Parks, Van Peebles and Ossie Davis, Spike's business savvy and swagger caught Hollywood off guard. The financial success of "She's Gotta Have It" created opportunities for Carl Franklin, Gary Gray and numerous others, including myself. That "DROP Squad" was the first film produced by 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks is a testament to our tenacity and the power Spike Lee held in the early 90's. "DROP Squad" would not be here, in any form, without him and I'm thankful for his contribution.
