DROP Squad: Director's Cut, Part 1 - Original release date, 10/23/94. Starring Eriq LaSalle, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Ving Rhames. This version was shown to pre-release audiences in Los Angeles and Washington DC before being cut to the final 87 minute release version. The original linear story has been restored along with several missing scenes. This cut was created from multiple work prints that were discovered on videotape. Sections of the final release version that were not altered have been left intact.

Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" marked the beginning of the modern renaissance in Black Cinema. Along with other directors such as Charles Burnett, Charles Lane, Julie Dash and Hale Germia; Spike proved there was an audience for intelligent films featuring people of color. Although set along his path by earlier pioneers such as Parks, Van Peebles and Ossie Davis, Spike's business savvy and swagger caught Hollywood off guard. The financial success of "She's Gotta Have It" created opportunities for Carl Franklin, Gary Gray and numerous others, including myself. That "DROP Squad" was the first film produced by 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks is a testament to our tenacity and the power Spike Lee held in the early 90's. "DROP Squad" would not be here, in any form, without him and I'm thankful for his contribution. Show less

This short film inspired the feature film "D.R.O.P. Squad" and was produced in 1988. Based on a short story called "The Deprogrammer" by David Taylor. "The Session" was another collaboration between myself and Butch Robinson with creative and production input from Dave as well as a fantastic cast featuring Eric Payne, Vondie Curtis Hall, Dwania Kyles, Nicole Powell and Leonard Thomas. I can't describe what an incredible experience this production was, and the reception the film got was equally impressive. At it's peak, "The Session" was screening on Friday nights at Theatre Four in Manhattan as well as touring the south at the request of the South Carolina Arts Commission. The film came to the attention of Spike Lee and eventually went on the become the first project he'd executive produce under his deal with Gramercy Pictures. Fitting in a way since, in many ways, the phenomenon created by "She's Gotta Have It" is what inspired the production of "The Session".
