On Tue 21 Aug 2018 here in Sydney at Oxford Art Factory, I played a 25-minute solo performance to open for Benny Greb's only Sydney clinic on his 'Art and Science of Groove' Australia / New Zealand tour for Vintage & Custom Drum Expo. This is called 'An Oasis of Quiet' - one of three pieces I played that night. I ended it with a short improvised drum solo cadenza.
To say that the prospect of playing to Benny and his 300+ audience was intimidating would be an understatement to say the least, especially since I radically modified my grip only about ten weeks earlier by transitioning out of necessity from a traditional marching snare drum grip in my left hand to matched grip. I was asked to perform this slot only about a week after the change, and, whilst I thought of canceling many times in the lead up, I thought it better to accept the challenge and to work hard on developing my new grip. I did this with thanks to 'The Murray Spivack Method as Taught by Chad Wackerman' course on Drum Channel as well as the instructional videos that the amazing Gordy Knudtson has on his YouTube channel.
Benny also helped calm my nerves during a half-hour chat I enjoyed with him backstage before I went on. My mantra from now on, as a result of all this, is simply to be relaxed, and to enjoy being myself. Thank you Benny!
