The big one. The one and only. The Burst.
Joel shows off the most legendary piece of guitar history: the 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard in a Sunburst finish ( http://goo.gl/57cvgd
), known to most simply as, the "Burst".
A brief history on what makes the Burst so special: Gibson Les Pauls were first sold in 1952 featuring a goldtop finish, two P-90 single coil pickups, and a one-piece, 'trapeze'-style bridge/tailpiece. The mid-50s brought upon several design changes, such as Tune-o-Matic bridges, higher output humbuckers in place of P-90s, and the introduction of the Custom Series Les Paul.
In 1958 the Les Paul saw its greatest design change in the introduction of the Standard series. Featuring a Cherry Red Sunburst (or Burst) finish that was an aesthetic leap from previous Gibson models, Standards were priced higher than the Goldtop and were an immediate flop amongst consumers. At the time, Gibson instruments were marketed towards and older, jazz-oriented audience that found them to be far too heavy and expensive, resulting in poor sales and only a small number of original Les Paul Standards to be made in their three year period of production before being discontinued in 1961.
It wasn't until the mid sixties that the Burst would gain popularity among the world's most iconic guitarists: Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Joe Walsh, and Jimmy Page to name only a few. This resurgence into the spotlight coupled with rising pressure from the public prompted Gibson to reintroduce the original single cutaway Les Paul design in 1968.
Because of its extreme rarity, iconic association, and unprecedented craftsmanship, the "Burst" is one of the most sought-after instruments in the world today.
This particular Les Paul is in extraordinary physical shape, with only a few blemishes to speak of (which Joel documents in great detail). Chicago Music Exchange is proud to have this incredible piece of music history at the store!
