I became acquainted with the late Bill Townsend 20 or so years ago. Bill was a HUGE Led Zeppelin/John Bonham aficionado. It is said that he bought this: John Bonham's *actual* Ludwig Amber Vistalite drum kit at a charity auction in the mid-1990s.
Here are some clips from a video Bill sent me in 1996 showing the drums set up.
*A couple things: It is stated in the Bonham book A THUNDER OF DRUMS that indeed a BILL TOWNSEND bought the kit.
I personally recall seeing a picture of the actual Bonham Amber drums in an ad for Sotheby's (or some other auction house), and in that pic it just showed the four piece: bass drum, rack tom and two floor toms.
Bill told me, however, that in fact that he got the actual cases and crates for them (in which there were a few crusty tour t shirts, a Led Zeppelin tour coat, 9 sticks, and some other things).
He also told me that gong pictured here came with the kit, but that he had sent it back to Paiste to be reconditioned (Doh!). He described it as being a little rough & having scorch marks from the shows...Of course that's like taking a 1913 Liberty Head nickel right from the display case and scrubbing it with 2 aught steel wool-as far as collectibility is concerned.....
