Curling your hair with a curling rod can create a glamorous look perfect for the workday or a romantic night out. Aveda Institute Minneapolis student Emily provides a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve loose curls.
Start by smoothing out your hair with your Aveda paddle brush, from roots to tips. Separate the hair from your ear upwards to form two sections. For now, twirl the top section up and secure it in place with duckbill clips. Apply Aveda Air Control Hairspray to the lower section and brush it out.
Take a small section of hair and wrap it around the rod. How tightly you wrap will determine the size of the curls. Once your hair is secured around the rod, hold it for three seconds to set the curl. Repeat for each part of the lower section. If you don’t have a curling rod, you can try this with a curling iron.
Release about half of the hair from the top section and spray with Air Control. Section this out in similar sizes as your previous curls and repeat the curling rod routine.
Next, pump some Aveda Light Element Smoothing Fluid into your palms, work it into your hands, and apply it to your curls. Run it through your hair with your fingers if you like your curls a bit tousled, or just gently pat it on if you prefer them to stay in perfect spirals. Once your curls are just as you’d like them, apply a final round of Air Control to set the look for the rest of the day.
