At the AtlantiCare Heart Institute's Valve Clinic, a team of AtlantiCare heart specialists evaluate patients with aortic stenosis to determine whether his or her heart is better served by traditional surgical aortic valve replacement or by TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement). TAVR is an excellent option for high-risk patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery. Working together, an interventional cardiologist and cardiac surgeon insert a new aortic valve within the diseased valve-while the heart is actively beating. The less invasive procedure can be performed one of three ways: transfemoral (through an incision in the leg), transapical (through an incision between the ribs) or transaortic (through an incision in the upper chest). Patients typically feel better immediately and recover faster. Visit http://www.atlanticare.org/... for more information.
