The Berlin Session presents a classic jazz lineup of saxophone (soprano), piano, bass and drums. The tunes are simple, the forms loose and the feel spontaneous. The music stretches widely throughout its acoustic fusion settings, with moods ranging from the ambient to the richly tonal to the aggressively avant-garde. Throughout the album the improvising makes strong and intelligent statements. The exchanges are rapid, sharp and insightful. While firmly grounded in its stylistic time and place, this is music that has left home. It is music of the moment and in the moment, played by highly articulate musicians with something to say both as soloists and as members of a collective.
Andy Sugg visited Berlin in 2011, where he recorded this session with drummer Jan Leipnitz, bassist Sean Pentland and Kate Kelsey-Sugg on piano.
