An ode to to commemorate the Bendy Buses in London - in particular the 29 Bus which ran from Trafalgar Square to Wood Green and was the heart of the community from 14th January 2006 to the 25th November 2011. An anarchic independent state, hub of intercultural connectivity, a bus you could pay for if you could afford it and you could bunk on if you couldn't. A bus where I was lapdanced by a lady in Somali lady in full niqab. A bus where I shared spliffs with random strangers. A bus that made me who I am today.
For all their flaws, cyclist deaths, muggings and malfunctions, Bendy Buses ran to the four poorest routes in London as a strategy to make London more accessible for established communities and diasporas. More importantly they were a fun beautiful space in which people shared freely, likely owing to the fact that it was a non-exclusive space in that you didn't have to pay to get on!
