TIME just named Gavin Grimm one of the 100 most influential people in the world. This is where his fight for trans rights began. On November 11, 2014, fifteen-year-old Gavin, a transgender boy, was forced to stand before his community with a basic request to recognize his humanity. Even under the cruelest of circumstances, though, Gavin Grimm has always shined.
The ACLU's Disability Rights work strives for an America free of discrimination against people with disabilities, where people with disabilities are valued, integrated members of society who have full access to education, homes, healthcare, jobs, and families. We are also committed to ensuring people with disabilities are no longer segregated into, and over-represented in, civil and criminal institutions such as nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, jails and prisons.
People Power is a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
