Simple Gifts Lyrics
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.
As I arranged this piece, I liked the idea of the two hand tapping and keeping the piece not so full. Just the melody, the bass line, and a little bit of percussion. Simple.
Ahh, simplicity. Something I’m not very good at. I always have new ideas that clutter my mind. I’m always trying out new music gear. I love technology. I like to research new skills all the time like robotics or how to build the ultimate woodworking shop. All of this builds up and overwhelms me at times to a point where I just want to simplify my life so I can enjoy it better rather than running around to all my interests and activities. You know the same old story about our current fast paced life and the overwhelming amount of information on the internet and how so many try to get away from this. On one hand I agree but it seems incredibly difficult to get away from all this as it is our culture. To get away seems to mean seclusion from everything. I guess my pursuit of this idea is to have a balance and control over what I’m involved in and fill my life with. It’s incredibly refreshing to go camping for a weekend with nothing except a guitar, a book, and maybe a notepad. Having a break like this once in a while certainly helps me to refocus on what really matters. My family and I have little spurts where we go through books and clothes to donate or sell what we don’t use anymore that seems to free my mind up a bit. There’s something about simplifying that causes me to feel more thankful for what I have. Maybe it’s because I’m realizing how much I have or it’s because my mind is a little more clear to allow room to think this.
In this video I used my incredibly versatile Larrivee OM-09 guitar.http://www.larrivee.com/
