I’ve been toying with the idea of routing an old Super Robot Wars game for a while now, but it wasn’t until this past weekend that I decided to actually do it. Just for the heck of it, I decided to try out the Neo Granzon code in Super Robot Wars EX, because I wanted to see how absurdly broken it would be in that game. I wasn’t disappointed. (Awful flashbacks to fighting it in Super Robot Wars 3 though…)
I know what you’re thinking: “Man, this run is so lame because it uses a code!” While Neo Granzon does utterly break the game, it actually makes a speedrun somewhat interesting. Instead of stressing about survivability, accuracy, and all that other junk, the entire focus here is how to optimize Shu’s path of total destruction. It’s closer to a modern Super Robot Wars run in that sense, but with an old coat of paint. Of course, being a lot shorter than any alternative doesn’t hurt either.
The route and execution here still have room for improvement, but I think this was a solid attempt overall. Some of the routing decisions might seem strange, but keep in mind that experience routing is HUGE in this run. Fatal critical hits on enemies that you wanted to weaken can/will ruin the route if they happen before Map 12, and I’ve lost multiple runs to that.
Full route is here: https://docs.google.com/doc...
Quick route notes:
1. Gravitron Cannon usage is a main focus for obvious reasons.
2. Black Hole Clusters are avoided as much as possible because of the slow animation.
3. Upgrading agility on Neo Granzon is so that Shu has 100% hit during Map 12 (otherwise, it’d be 92%).
4. It’s impossible to complete the Tellius training map in one go without wasting an enormous amount of time.
Enjoy watching Shu wreck everything in the known universe. :)
