This year, the United Nations Economic and Social Council turns 70 and its time to celebrate the Council and its major milestones to improve lives around the globe. The 70th anniversary is a historic moment to reflect on achievements and actions. In the seven decades of its existence, ECOSOC can look retrospectively at many major milestones: helping to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and making the connection between development and human rights, opening the door to civil society, putting women at the heart of development efforts, creating a response to global HIV/AIDS epidemic, supporting transitions from conflict to peace, giving youth a voice at the UN and overseeing the transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On 22 January, a commemoration event will be held at UN Headquarters in New York, bringing together key figures and stakeholders from ECOSOC’s past and present to mark 70 years of the Council’s efforts in support of the three dimensions of sustainable development—economic, social and environmental.
Happy Birthday, UN ECOSOC!
