In 2014, Reed woke up from a nap, unable to bear weight on his right leg. Thinking he may have a broken bone, his parents, Erika and Jesse, took him to a local urgent care. When his leg didn’t get better, Reed was referred to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital where pediatric neurologists diagnosed him with an extremely rare genetic condition that causes the white matter in his brain to disappear. In fact, he’s one of fewer than 200 people worldwide with this disease. There’s no known cure, but Erika and Jesse are hopeful that research may save Reed’s life. In the meantime, they focus on giving him as many unforgettable experiences as possible. Meet Reed Havlik at uichildrens.org/2016-Reed.
