Eight-year-old Thomas Walkup came to Southern California from Millville, New Jersey weeks ago to have an experimental surgery to treat an eye condition that threatened his vision and future. With the surgery completed and Thomas on the road to recovery, Friday was time to get down to business: Meeting his hometown hero, LA Angels centerfielder Mike Trout.

Thomas and his mother Susan and sister Alyssa came to the UC Irvine Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute for an experimental surgery Dr. Robert Lingua to treat congenital nystagmus. The condition features uncontrollable eye movements and diminished vision that may leave those with nystagmus functionally blind.
