The sentenced me to 40 years in prison for having a miscarriage.
I was raped. I didn’t know I was pregnant.
One night in her bathroom, Teresa began bleeding heavily. Then she lost consciousness.
When I woke up in the hospital, I was surrounded by police. I was accused of having an abortion and arrested for aggravated homicide.
This is El Salvador. This is what happens when abortion is completely banned.
Teresa went to jail when her son was six years old.
The hardest thing I lived in prison was not seeing him. I could only see him two times in the four and a half years that I was in prison.
There was a moment when I didn’t have the strength to keep going. But I just remember that I have a son. It’s for him that I have to keep living.
After a five-year battle supported by the Center for Reproductive Rights, Teresa is now free.
When I hugged him, I said, “my son is so big.” When I left him, I could still carry him. He tells me “we’re going to move ahead, mom. I want to study. I want to be a lawyer to defend women like you.”
There are dozens more women like Teresa still in prison. And we won’t stop fighting until all women in El Salvador are free from this cruel ban.
Keep supporting each one of these women. They also want to be with their children, with their families.
