    Squadron Leader Tony Pickering was among ‘the few’ who flew Spitfires protecting the skies from the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain 75 years ago. He was also once shot down by a German fighter plane – and was forced to bale out at 3,000ft from his blazing Hurricane. Tony, originally from Rugby, was just 19 when he was sent into battle after just a few practice flights in August 1940, taking on Hitler’s bombers as they attacked British airfields and cities.
