Workplace Conversations: The True Purpose of One on One Meetings
Here’s a snack-size sample from Workplace Conversations. Today we’ll talk about one on one meetings.
The purpose of 1:1 meetings is to develop people.
Just like delegating and coaching, the primary purpose of having regular, scheduled 1-to-1 meetings with your direct reports is to develop them and set them up for success.
If you don’t hold regular 1-to-1 meetings, here’s some of what you’re sacrificing:
Giving feedback that helps people continually improve.
Engaging employees in a way that draws out additional discretionary effort.
To get started, determine what you want each employee to bring into the meeting. Think about each of your direct reports. Take some time to craft the questions you’d like them to prepare for and answer in each meeting.
It won’t be the same questions for each employee. Make this relevant to the needs of each individual.
